How to Move Steam Games to Another Drive (Without Redownloading)

Steam installs every game to one default folder, and that drive always fills up faster than you expect. The good news: you do not need to uninstall anything or redownload a single gigabyte. Steam’s built-in Storage Manager can move installed games between drives in minutes, keeping saves, mods folders, and workshop content intact while you reclaim space on your system drive.

This guide covers the official Storage Manager method, moving a whole library at once, and setting up a brand-new drive as a game library. The steps follow Valve’s own documentation for Steam on Windows, and the same menus exist on macOS and Linux with minor naming differences.

M.2 NVMe SSD next to a gaming PC tower with a wireless controller
Moving games between two internal drives is dramatically faster than redownloading — a 100 GB game transfers in minutes over SATA or NVMe.

Before you start: add a second Steam library folder

  1. Open Steam and go to Steam, then Settings, then Storage.
  2. Click the drive dropdown at the top and choose Add Drive.
  3. Select the new drive or folder where games should live. Steam creates a SteamLibrary folder there automatically.
  4. Optional: click the three-dot menu on the new drive and choose Make Default so future installs land there.

Our pick for this guide: Samsung 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD

A fast 2TB NVMe gives your Steam library somewhere worth moving to, so load times improve instead of just freeing up space.

Method 1: Move games with Steam’s Storage Manager

  1. In Steam Settings, open the Storage tab and select the drive that currently holds the game.
  2. Tick the checkbox next to each game you want to move — the total size updates at the bottom.
  3. Click Move and pick the destination library from the dropdown.
  4. Wait for the transfer bar to finish. Do not launch the game or close Steam mid-move.
  5. Launch the game once to confirm it starts from the new location.

Method 2: Move an entire library folder at once

  1. Close Steam completely (right-click the tray icon and choose Exit).
  2. Copy the whole SteamLibrary folder to the new drive with File Explorer.
  3. Reopen Steam, go to Settings, then Storage, then Add Drive, and point it at the copied folder.
  4. Steam detects the games automatically. Once everything shows as installed, remove the old library folder from the old drive.

Method 3: Moving to a brand-new drive

If you are adding a dedicated game drive, install it first — our step-by-step guide on how to install an M.2 NVMe SSD covers desktops and laptops, and the best 4TB NVMe SSDs roundup compares current high-capacity options if your library has outgrown 1TB. Once Windows sees the new drive, use Method 1 to migrate your games. If you are replacing your only drive rather than adding one, it is easier to clone the old drive to the new SSD so Windows, Steam, and your games all move together.

High-capacity NVMe SSD used as a dedicated Steam game library drive
Keep 10 to 15 percent of a game drive free — SSDs slow down noticeably when filled to the brim, and game updates need scratch space.

Troubleshooting: game not recognized after moving

  1. If a game shows as uninstalled, add its new folder as a library via Settings, then Storage, then Add Drive — Steam rescans it.
  2. If a game launches but stutters or crashes, right-click it, open Properties, then Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files.
  3. If the destination drive keeps disconnecting or transfers stall, check the drive itself — our guide on how to check SSD health shows the warning signs in two minutes.
  4. Windows drive letters matter: if an external library drive changes letter, reassign the old letter in Disk Management and restart Steam.

Frequently asked questions

Will moving Steam games delete my saves?

No. Most saves live outside the game folder, in Documents, AppData, or Steam Cloud, so moving a game does not touch them. Games with Steam Cloud enabled also sync saves to Valve’s servers, giving you an extra safety net either way.

Can I move Steam games to an external drive?

Yes — add the external drive as a library in the Storage settings and move games normally. A USB 3.0 or faster SSD works well; older USB hard drives load noticeably slower. This is a popular option on gaming laptops, where internal storage upgrades are limited on many models.

Do I have to redownload games when switching drives?

No. Steam’s Storage Manager moves the installed files directly between drives, so nothing is downloaded again. A redownload is only needed if the original files were deleted before being moved or copied.

Does moving games to an SSD make them run faster?

Load times and texture streaming improve, often dramatically for open-world titles, but frame rates barely change because rendering depends on the GPU and CPU. Move the games you play most to your fastest drive and leave older titles on a slower one.
